The mine shafts run all though the volcano walls. This is the main source of fuel to the inhabitants and most of the men work here. The shafts are nothing much to look at, typical carved out black walls. The tracks run in the center of these massive tunnels. There is enough space on each side for several students to walk along. Every so often thick wood beams seem to protrude from the walls, there are supports, they are along the ceiling as well. Along the way, attached the support beams, are oil lanterns, giving off decent light. The sounds of swishing cars echo through out the tunnels.
The name, Howling Mines, has a story. These mines were once worked by a group of men that were washed ashore by luck or will of the island. Back in the days or prospecting and panning, a small ship crashed off the coast of the island. There was a crew of five men, that washed ashore. They were taken in by those living here and offered a place in the community. Over time a few of them settled and became part of the village, but two of them men were still sick with the need for gold.
Their ship was not supposed to travel that far. They were going along the coast of the mainland looking for another site to prospect. After coming to live here, the two men, fled into some of the shafts. Back then there were not very many. For many years it was hard to get the needed coal from the shafts we the men roamed them with pick axes looking for gold. Eventually the two found a single nugget, most likely fake, and in a fight killed each other for it. It's now said to be haunted and the howls are from the old men still searching.
