Kai's Academy of Magic is located inside a volcano; before you worry, the volcano is very much extinct. The volcano is on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, near Hawaii, with just enough land to skirt around the base. The island is named Ahi'Make Moku, which means dead fire island. The place was discovered by a group of villagers looking for a more discreet place for their practices. More about that to come....
The core of the volcano is cold, but once a year the ground gets very warm. The locals tend to go shoeless during this week. The homes and businesses are set into the sides of the volcano. there are paths and stairs leading all over. Along the bottom, they tend to spread out more. At the north side of the volcano is a large waterfall that empties into a wide pool. The water is warm and everyone enjoys this place. There are large rock formations all around covered in soft moss and vibrant tropical flowers. It's a great spot for romance. The locals claim the Menehune* have blessed this spot for love.
In the center of town is a long black strip and a small hut. This is the airport. The only way in or out is by plane. You won't find any jumbo jets here though. Most planes coming in are classified as executive jets. They can travel for several hours and hold up to fourteen people. These are generally nice planes and are well kept. The academy has two that are used to transport students and staff. The pilots especially enjoy bringing in new people. As they fly near the island the passengers begin to clinch the arm rests. The plane gets closer and closer, causing some to scream. The pilot laughs as the plane sails into the side of the volcano, only to pass though a magical opening and flies safely down to the landing strip.
Along the western wall is a large elaborate structure, set into the side of the volcano. This is the academy. Students come from all over to attend. All forms of magic are welcomed. The students generate an economy for the locals and in turn they provide their many wares. The island has it's own monetary system. The school is quite old, but it's not showing the age. The pathways along the front of the castle are paved with large cobblestones and are flanked with a short wall. These are highly popular with the students who love to sit and watch all the commotion at the bottom. The buildings are a mixture of black, reds, and oranges that all come from the harden molten lava and rock from the volcano. The only way to and from the castle and the town is a sky tram, each car holds two people. The trams run during the day and the last one to or from the castle stop at curfew for the students, so don't be late.
There are four large buildings that house the students, their flags can be seen flowing in the breeze. The only other building that is larger is the main hall. There is a tower coming off the center that the students have a few classes in. The main hall is the gathering for their meetings, meals, and parties. The school houses many fine classes and excellent professors. Nothing but the best for our students.
The locals have found that the volcano is an excellent source of coal. They have created many tunnels all around the perimeter for mining. The tunnels are wide enough for the track and for students to walk through. There's many ghost stories that have come from just the caves alone. The coal is used as a power source for the whole island. The local men have become quite mechanical when creating new ways to use the coal as fuel.
One of the many tunnels is rather short. There is no track and no more mining done in the area. When digging through the black rock some workers discovered an oddity. There was a large forest like area. This had to be the work of the Menehune again. The area wasn't like a typical tropical forest. The trees were of all sorts of wood, anything from Apple to Yew can be found. there is a small stream that runs east to west though the area, possibly a run off from the waterfall. The place gives a feeling as if your being watched. The locals rarely go in, but on occasion some curious students wander in. The Menehune are always up for fun and games.
Near the post office in town is a large tunnel that has been specially made. The cart and track are powered by a steam engine. This track goes down a rather long and twisty path to the outside of the volcano. The car ends at the only beach on the island, well only accessible one. The car runs once and hour taking students up and down. It is a large cove, but no ship can sail in or out. The opening allowing the water to flow and the sea life to come and go is underwater, but don't worry the beach gets great waves.
The water is crystal blue and the sands are nice and white. The place is wonderful. The beach stays busy, but it's so massive that you never feel crowded. Palm trees provide some shading. There are lounge chairs along the surf to rest on. Only one person lives on the beach. His name is Jonas Swisher. He has a small little hut that he sells fruity drinks, fresh fruit, dried fruit and nuts to the people coming to the beach. There is much to be done here, swimming, fishing, hiking, sun bathing, sports, you name it. Everyone is welcome at the beach.
The weather on the island is unusual to say the least. Being in a volcano one would think there would be blue skies and warm weather year round, but this island has deep magic roots and all seasons are represented. Even though our setting takes place on the floor of a volcano, there is still the visual illusion of an open sky. It won't get below freezing, but it has been known to snow. The floor of the volcano has many worn paths that lead all over the town. These are used for foot traffic as well as bicycles. You can rent or purchase your own bike in town. Overall, the island is the perfect place to live, encompassing the vast variety the world has to offer in one great place.
