Ellie is a sweet, quiet little thing who tends to blend into the background in most social situations, but in the classroom she is usually pretty outspoken.  Most people might think that being the granddaughter of the Headmistress would entitle her to special privileges, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Ellie never feels free of the watchful eyes of her family, and so she always tries to be on her best behavior, and this means studying exceptionally hard and not getting into any sort of trouble.  Unfortunately, it also means basically being a social pariah.  Ellie is into what normal teenage girls are into... boys, shopping, music, etc.  However,  she is used to being an outsider, so she doesn't try super hard to make friends... but that doesn't mean she doesn't want them.

Ellie is one of seven grandchildren of Headmistress Buchanan,  Growing up in a prestigious wizarding family definitely has its perks, but it has its downfalls too.  She was raised in luxury, with people waiting on her hand and foot and the best of everything money could buy, and that included private tutors from the time she was three years old.  By the time Ellie got into magic school (at her family's alma mater, of course), she knew more about magic than most 7th years.  

She tried her best not to stand out at her old school, but people quickly came to find out that she was the granddaughter of the school's Transfiguration professor.  Ellie often wanted to just hide in the corner of a classroom but wasn't able to without the professor reporting back to her grandmother, and that meant facing a strict lecture on not living up to her potential and perhaps even her own personal detention, which usually included writing a lengthy essay.  Pleasing her family always won out, and she was pretty much rejected from the social aspect of magic school.

Then her grandmother was offered the job as Headmistress at a new school near Hawaii and Ellie was, of course, expected to go along.  So she's packed her things and moved here to carry out her fifth year.  She tried getting her parents to let her change her name so that everyone wouldn't automatically put two and two together, but they just acted insulted and told her that being a Buchanan was something to be proud of, refusing her request.  So now she is just crossing her fingers and hoping she can balance a social life with the expectations of her family.
